Cattle breeding in Sri Lanka
Cattle rearing is
being carried out on a large scale in Sri Lanka as a small and large scale
industry. People living in villages raise one
or two cows for themselves. The food
for the cows is obtained from the small gardens found there. Those who have small gardens of their own will own cattle
farms. Thus many privately owned cattle farms can be found all over Sri Lanka. Cattle
farms are also being set up with the help of the government and the private
sector through state-owned Antigama State and Nikawaratiya Plantation.
From time to time the government introduces various schemes to promote this industry. Although government incentive schemes have been implemented to nurture small-scale workers, they have not yet yielded a definite and maximum benefit. The cows are imported from countries like India, Australia and New Zealand and are provided free of cost to the farmers. Although the government has set up several workshops for them to cultivate and extract milk from them, it has not been able to complete the milk supply required for Sri Lanka.
Therefore, the milk required for Sri Lanka is largely sourced from countries such as New Zealand and Australia. Children between the ages of one and ten consume extra milk foods Similarly growers consume dairy foods in their mornings and evenings. Milk is consumed directly as food. Milk from cows in Sri Lanka is also used for products such as yoghurt and Curd.
These, however, do not produce high quality products. can tell Even in countries like Sri Lanka where animal farming is practiced, modern technologies are not being handled. Therefore, proper milk production is not available in Sri Lanka
Ambewala Cattle farm is considered to
be the largest farm in Sri Lanka. Ambewala Animal Farm is established at
Ambewala in the Nuwara Eliya District of the Central Province. Cows of many
exotic breeds are bred here. Special grasses are grown for this purpose and the
prevailing cold climate is very suitable for these cows. Dairy feed is produced
from foreign breed cows found in Ambewala
